Taitung, Taiwan (ROC)

The relaxed coastal city of Taitung (台東 or 臺東; Táidōng) is a highly likeable transportation hub from which travellers access Green Island, Lanyu and Taiwan's southern east coast. On Taiwan’s southeastern coast, the alluring, snail-shaped county of Taitung is Taiwan’s wonderful secret. Taitung escapes mass tourism, despite having some of the island’s most stunning geography and being a hub for its deeply rooted cultural traditions. Sparkling Lake Powell’s a standout for water sports in scenic canyon country. The nation’s second-largest manmade lake dominates Glen Canyon National Recreation area, but there are also unforgettable, land-based sights where sand, sky, and water meet. For views, it’s hard to beat houseboat digs at Lake Powell Resorts & Marinas or Antelope Point Marina. Visit either as a starting point to cruise the clear blue-green waters on a panoramic boat tour, or rent wakeboards, water skis, paddleboards, or kayaks. A rafting excursion gives you another vantage point from which to view the canyon. Locals say that until recently, few knew of Horseshoe Bend and Antelope Canyon. But word on their eye-popping beauty has gotten out. These two top-rated attractions are among the most photographed in the Southwest. The trailhead – a sandy incline just off Highway 89 – leads to the lip of Horseshoe Bend, which plunges 1,000 feet to the Colorado River below. The 360-degree views of Paria Plateau and Vermilion Cliffs change with the light; you’ll have lots of fellow travelers at sunrise and sunset, but still have plenty of elbow room.
